RUMFORD — Western Foothills Kids Association will celebrate outside of school learning at its annual Lights On event. WFKA has two sites for afterschool programming serving more than 240 students a year. It also runs the successful Full STEAM Ahead summer program for another 190 students.

Lights On is nationwide endeavor to show the powerful impact of outside of school day learning. The local event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Mountain Valley Middle School. It is open to all community members, families, area organizations and partners  who wish to join the students celebrating their extended learning opportunities.

The MVMS cooking class will provide a free chili dinner at 5 p.m.

There will be displays of afterschool programs from art, MVMS for the community, Reading Buddies, hands-on robotics with Mr. Bridges and STEM table. There will also be a community resource table for information on local organizations partners and programs.

At 6 p.m. there will be a performance from the comedy improv team “Light Camera Action.” This extremely funny and talented group of middle-schoolers is a student-led group that loves what they do and sharing it with others.

Door prizes will be drawn all evening and there will be a special drawing for anyone who completes the Cyber safety activity.

Research has shown that students who regularly participate in Community Learning Centers such as WFKA show improvement in their school attendance, class participation and behavior, homework completion, and reading and math achievement scores and grades.
