LEWISTON — Maine Conservation Voters recently presented its annual Community Climate Champion Award to Baxter Brewing in Lewiston for Baxter’s commitment to making the beer brewing process more sustainable.

One of the founding principles of Baxter Brewing was to be a sustainably driven and environmentally friendly business. The company buys American Wind power offsets for 100 percent of its electrical use. The building itself represents the company’s values. Owners refurbished an old building instead of starting new, utilized energy-efficient lighting, outfitted it with mostly used equipment and have an energy and steam recovery system in the brew house.

Additionally, spent grain feeds local cattle, solid waste is composted, wastewater is neutralized before entering the town’s sewage system and there is a strict recycling program. Sustainability also shows in the product, which uses cans because they take less energy to create and are twice as likely to be recycled by Americans.
