The Androscoggin County Humane Society is sending out circulars giving the “winter rules” for the care of horses. The rules include: Protect your animals from cold. This will make them more comfortable and will save you feed. Stop the holes in your barn. Board in your tie-up. Blanket your horses on frosty nights in the fall, when their coats are short. Give your horses and cattle a good bed. Bedding is cheap. Water your horses at least three times a day. A good grooming costs no money, and is equal to two quarts of oats. A horse cannot thrive on hay alone. He needs oats or corn for strength. Keep your horse’s feet soft, and have him shod often. More feet are ruined in the stable than on the road. Do not degrade your family by using a lame horse.

He cited several instances of “consistent offenders” who cause such blockage of streets and sidewalks that passage is difficult if not impossible.

It wasn’t another plant closing that caused the lines at the Maine Jobs Service early Thursday — but the start of the long-awaited Walmart hiring. The Auburn store, under construction at Turner Street and Mount Auburn Avenue, is scheduled to open before Christmas. The first advertisement for employees was published Thursday, and more than 200 people scheduled interviews throughout the day. Walmart will hire 200 to 250 people.
