RUMFORD — Peter J. Cunningham Jr., 85, of Rumford, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 4, at home surrounded by family.
He was born in Rumford in 1932 to Lozia and Peter Cunningham and lived there for the remainder of his life. He married Jeanne Morissette, and they lived a happy life together. In 1982, they built their home together up on Eaton Hill Road. Peter was well-known for his green thumb and planted many apple, pear, peach and cherry trees in their beautiful yard along with grapes, raspberries and blueberries. They also planted a bountiful vegetable garden every summer and shared with many.
He loved hunting and fly-fishing and spending time at his camp at Spencer Pond during all seasons, a camp he owned with his best friend, Ed Arsenault. He started his career at Oxford Paper Company at a young age and then was drafted into the U.S. Army from 1956 through 1962. He returned to the mill and was a steam plant engineer when he retired. He worked very hard his last couple of years there, putting in lots of overtime, so he could retire early. He enjoyed travel, especially his trips to Alaska.
Peter is survived by his children, Peter Cunningham, Randy Cunningham and wife, Donna, Trena Magoon, Zachary Cunningham and wife, Paula, Cindrie and husband, Jimbo Cormier, Mitch Cunningham and his wife, Heather; stepdaughter, Judy and husband, Paul Lowell; and stepson, Carl Morissette; and many grand- and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne; his brothers, Arthur, Fred and William Cunningham; his sisters, Alva Gallant, Dot Myles, Margaret Thibodeau and Theresa York; his stepsons, Henry Morissette and Kenneth Morissette.
