Maine women, men and teens may be eligible for free health care services such as birth control, pregnancy testing, STD testing and treatment, and more, thanks to the state’s Limited Family Planning Benefit program.

The state’s Limited Family Planning Benefit is available to legal Maine residents who have an individual income of $25,205 or less per year but do not qualify for MaineCare. Eligibility for the program is based on individual income, not household income. Patients who qualify can receive covered family planning services for free.

Some of those services are:

• Pregnancy testing and preconception counseling;

• Birth control methods, including emergency contraception and Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCs);

• Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and UTIs;

• Annual gynecological exams; and

• Screening for cervical cancer, and if needed, repeat Pap tests and colposcopies.

Applications are available at Maine Family Planning clinics, online and at DHHS offices. Patients should fill out the application and bring it with them to their appointment with identification and four weeks’ worth of pay stubs.
