An echo of the recent great local drive for the Y. M. C. A. is reported by Alberta P. Allen, a Junior high school pupil in Auburn. She received a contribution that carries far more weight in the drive than the mere value of the money given. The gift was $5 and accompanying it was a short note which read: “A Grand Army man, aged 75, wants to give his bit also. William M. Plummer, Main St., Auburn, fought through the Civil War in the First Maine Cavalry.”

The Eastland Shoe Co. at Lisbon has received a town permit for a new plant that officials say may employ 30 to 50 workers by the end of the year and could eventually provide up to 150 jobs. The Lisbon Planning Board approved a conditional use permit Thursday night for Eastland to open the plant, its third, in the Industrial Park at Lisbon Falls. The company says it is buying its own building for the operation. Eastland already runs plants in Freeport and Fryeburg that reportedly employ more than 600 workers. Eastland will start its Lisbon operation with 30 to 50 people, bringing some key core employees from its Freeport plant to Lisbon for the start-up.
