Hundreds of Lewiston-Auburn area residents swarmed to the business districts in brisk, sunny, weather Friday to begin their Christmas shopping. Much of the time there was elbow-to-elbow pedestrian traffic along the sidewalks and bumper-to-bumper vehicle traffic in the streets. Cash registers inside the gaily decorated business establishments rang up sale after sale. “We had traffic all day long. It was very heavy,” reported Richard Willmers, assistant manager of the B. Peck Co. department store. “I would say it was heavier than usual and I think that was due to the nice weather.”

Bustling crowds and long lines are as common during the holiday season as mistletoe and evergreen wreaths. But the U.S. Post Office hopes it can make mailing a present less chaotic than buying one. The post offices on Ash Street in Lewiston and at Great Falls Plaza in Auburn will open their doors over the weekends until the Christmas rush is over. On Saturdays — Dec. 5, 12 and 19 — the Ash Street and the Great Falls Plaza post offices will be open until 4 p.m. every afternoon. Furthermore, on Sundays — Dec. 13 and 20 — they will be open from noon until 5 p.m. Auburn Postal Superintendent Sherry Burrill said the additional hours are specifically aimed at helping people who work all day during the week to get their packages off to loved ones.
