Jacob Gaudin peaked at the right time and for that, he has been named the Sun Journal Golfer of the Year.
At the MVC Championships at Natanis’ Arrowhead course, the Dirigo senior shot a 79, which put him a tie for second place, seven shots behind Mitchell Tarrio to qualify for the Class C individual championships. Two weeks later, also on the Arrowhead course, Gaudin backed up that 79, with a 77 at the state championships where he finished third, nine shots behind Logan Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy, who fired a 68.
Gaudin was hoping not to embarrass himself in playing with Thompson, who’s one of the best junior golfers in the state.
“I just wanted to keep up with him and didn’t want to make myself look like a fool,” Gaudin said. “I don’t think I made myself look to bad, 77 is pretty good for the (Arrowhead course). He’s a really great golfer and he shot a really great score.”
Gaudin also shot an 82 to helped the Cougars to a fifth-place finish at the Class C state team championship.
Why did he play so well at the end of the season? He got the flat stick going.
“I was making better contact with the ball and I was putting a lot better,” Gaudin said. “We played a lot of practice rounds at Natanis, so we got the feel for the greens.”
Head coach Butch McKenna said Gaudin’s best attribute is being level headed on the course.
“I think his steady play was a telling factor,” McKenna said. “He was consistent all the way through. I think he only had two bad rounds out of 10 or 11. They weren’t bad, they weren’t up to his standards that he wanted. He just came back and shot better. He’s a type of kid that’s not content in just winning, he wants to play better.”
Gaudin said he won’t play golf competitively in college, but enjoyed his four years of high school golf.
“I definitely think I proved myself throughout all four years of school,” Gaudin said. “This year was probably the best year with the performance I had at (team) states, MVCs, and individual states. I would say the four years were a success.”
