Freedom of expression topic of event

LEWISTON — “Voices of Maine: An Exploration of Freedom of Expression in Maine” will be the topic of a meeting from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, at USM Lewiston-Auburn Campus, Room 170.

Organized by USM’s Toward a Global Ethics (LAC370), the interactive event invites participants to explore Freedom of Expression at USM and in the community.

Student leaders will guide participants through film vignettes, public art activities, speakers, and conversation to consider the value and limits of Freedom of Expression to a public university and to democratic participation.

UMaine Cooperative Extension open house

PARIS — UMaine Cooperative Extension in Oxford County will have an open house from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at 9 Olson Road.

Visitors will see highlights from programs, decorate cookies and have mulled cider.

The event is open to the public.

Sons of Italy to meet

RUMFORD — Sons of Italy Lodge 467 will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, at the lodge on Route 108.

There will be a potluck lunch with Christmas prizes following the meeting. All members are invited to attend.

Chesterville Christmas party Dec. 10

CHESTERVILLE — The annual Chesterville Town Christmas Party will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, in the Chesterville Town Office, Dutch Gap Road.

There will be crafts, cookie-decorating, light refreshments, a story, gift table, and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

This free event is sponsored by the North Chesterville Extension Homemakers.

Friends of the Arts annual meeting

RANGELEY — The Rangeley Friends of the Arts will hold its annual meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, RFA Lakeside Theater, 2493 Main St.

The public is invited to attend to learn about the RFA and its mission.

Regular business will include voting on the budget for 2018, as well as nominations and voting for new board members and officers.

Anderson-Staples Post to meet

OXFORD — Anderson-Staples Post 112, American Legion, will have a regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at the post on 169 King St.

It will begin with a potluck supper followed by meetings of the Legion, Sons of the Legion and Legion Auxiliary around 7 p.m. 

AARP chapter to meet

PARIS — The holiday meeting for the Oxford Hills Chapter of AARP will be held on Monday, Dec. 11, at the First Congregational Church on East Main St.

A chicken pie lunch will be served at noon for $8, and reservations are required by calling by Friday, Dec. 8. Dues will also be collected for next year at this time.

Those attending are asked to bring a wrapped gift with a $5 limit for the  Christmas celebration.

There will be no January meeting as the program committee will be meeting to plan for next year. Anyone with ideas for next year’s programs will be welcomed.

The winter weather cancellation policy is to meet the following day, on Tuesday, during December, February and March. Cancellations will be if school is canceled or they will be announced on radio station 92.7.

Society plans Christmas meeting

MEXICO — The Mexico Historical Society will hold the Christmas meeting and potluck at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, in the Calvin Lyons Hall.

The guests for the evening will be members from the Rumford, Dixfield, Peru, Byron and Canton Historical Societies. Members and guest are welcome.

Those attending should bring items for the food pantry and a memory to share of a Christmas past.

The snow date is snow date for Dec. 18; if school is cancelled due to weather conditions, the meeting will be canceled.
