CANTON — Merle B. Knox Jr., 93, passed away Friday, Dec. 1, in Canton. Merle was born on April 29, 1924, in Peru, to Merle B. Sr. and Gladys (Babb) Knox.

He enlisted in the Army to help fight in WWII and was stationed on the SS Leopoldville, which sank on Dec. 24, 1944, and rested at the bottom of the English Channel.

Merle was wounded in action overseas and received a Purple Heart.

During his basic training, he met the first love of his life, Juanita Crider. They were married and raised two daughters, Patricia and Mary, and celebrated 57 years together until Juanita’s death in 2001.

Merle returned home and was a proud logger until 1970, when he and his wife started Knox Loam and Gravel. Shortly after the passing of his daughter, Patricia, at the age of 58, he continued to help his grandson, Kevin, keep the family business going. At the age of 80, Merle decided to retire and he met the second love of his life, Jackie Therrien. They spent many years together, playing cards and enjoying each other’s company until her passing.

When he was young, Merle enjoyed hunting and fishing, hard work and a nice shot of R&R Whiskey with family and friends. He also enjoyed doing puzzles, riding around on his power chair and tormenting the good people of Clover Manor.
