AUGUSTA — Surrounded by family and friends, Rep. Rick Mason was sworn in as the newest member of the Maine House of Representatives on Wednesday by Gov. Paul LePage.
Mason was elected in a special election last month to represent the people of Lisbon, finishing the term started by his late wife, the Hon. Gina Mason, who passed away unexpectedly in September.
“I want to thank everyone for their prayers, love and support during this very challenging time for our family,” Mason said, according to a written statement issued by the House Republican Office. “I look forward to being a strong voice for the people of Lisbon in the Maine House.”
In the same statement, Assistant House Republican Leader Rep. Ellie Espling of New Gloucester said, “Rep. Gina Mason is sorely missed in the Maine Legislature. We look forward to welcoming Rep. Rick Mason to our caucus where we know he will proudly carry on her legacy and selfless work in the Maine House of Representatives.”
Mason won a special election by a vote of 1,180 to 868 in November.
His son, Senate Majority Leader Garrett Mason, R-Lisbon, who has served in the Legislature since 2010, announced his campaign for the Blaine House earlier this year.
The second session of the 2017-18 Maine Legislature will begin Jan. 3.
