The rivalry between the Old Town and Orono high school hockey teams used to be one of the greatest in the state. Five years into the cooperative team effort to keep high school hockey alive for the two communities, the Old Town-Orono Black Bears have shown that they can compete. The team finished second last season, falling just short of a North B title against Waterville in an overtime, nail-biting season closer.
On Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. alumni from both high school teams are invited to play in a benefit game at Alfond Arena. Players will be asked to make a donation to cover the ice cost, as well as help raise money for the team.
“When these kids are on the ice, you can’t tell who goes to what high school during the school day – whether they are Orono Red Riots or Old Town Coyotes. They are all Black Bears, two communities that have come together as one to play competitive hockey,” said Coach Dennis Collins. “But we look forward to the alumni game each year simply for bragging rights and a fun way to raise some money to keep the program going. It’s great to see how important hockey was and still is for these communities.”
Tickets to watch the game will be $6 each with proceeds going to the Old Town-Orono Hockey Boosters, a group of dedicated parents and hockey supporters that have worked together from day one to ensure that the players are fully supported on and off the ice.
