AUBURN — Police say an elderly woman was backing out of a parking space about 9:40 a.m Wednesday when she struck the side of Republic Jewelry and Collectibles at 212 Center St.
The driver, 85-year-old Virginia Huntington, of Auburn, was not hurt, nor was anyone inside the building.
Witnesses said it appeared Huntington hit the gas instead of the brake as she was pulling out in her Hyundai Sonata.
Dan Cunliffe II, owner of Republic Jewelry and Collectibles said they were able to clean up the damage and keep the store open.
“It was a crazy noise to hear all that glass shattering in the store,” he said. “I sprang from my office chair to see what had happened.”
Cunliffee said it was mostly sports and movie memorbilia that got strewn in the crash. A Fenway Park replica and several snow globes were destroyed in the wreck.
Police were investigating the crash later Wednesday. The name of the driver was not immediately available.
