NEWRY — The Newry select board Tuesday rescheduled a special town meeting to vote on funding for the Newry Withdrawal Committee.

The special meeting is now planned for 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 4, 2018, at the Bear River Grange Hall. A regular meeting of the select board will begin at 5 p.m.

Originally scheduled for the Dec. 19 meeting, which had been set by the select board on Dec. 13, the special town meeting was not posted for seven full days prior to the town meeting.

The Jan. 4 meeting is to vote on a proposal to spend $24,500 from an undesignated surplus account to finance the activities of the Withdrawal Committee for the rest of the 2017-18 fiscal year.

The Newry Withdrawal Committee has run out of funding for its effort to negotiate a withdrawal agreement with SAD 44. The town had appropriated $50,000 in 2014, but the withdrawal process has not yet concluded. Negotiations have been at a stalemate.
