WILTON — A chimney fire Christmas night spread to the second-floor walls of an apartment at 10 Cameron St., putting four people and two dogs out of their home.
The tenant, along with her cousin and two children, smelled smoke about 10:45 p.m. Monday, but were able to leave the apartment safely, Fire Chief Sonny Dunham said.
They saw fire coming out of the chimney, according to Dunham, and the walls were hot.
The apartment duplex is owned by Janis Pryor, he said. Dunham, however, said he did not have the names of those who had to evacuate the apartment.
A wood stove was in use on the first floor at the time of the fire, according to Dunham.
The apartment sustained significant damage, he said, and walls and ceilings had to be torn out.
The Red Cross was called in to help the tenants.
Tenants in the other apartment are expected to be out of their home for a couple days due to the smoke, Dunham said.
Some 38 firefighters from Wilton, East Dixfield, Farmington and Jay responded to the fire on Cameron Street, across from the driveway leading to Cushing School.
