LEWISTON — In one evening of modern square dancing, people can get 5,000 to 8,000 steps without ever thinking about the exercise. Dancing also engages the mind, relieves stress and includes people in a larger community of dancers throughout Maine, New England and internationally.
It’s time to erase the old image of square dancing from school days and television. “The music was the biggest surprise,” said one new dancer. “I was expecting just country and bluegrass, but the variety was very refreshing.”
Today’s dancing is done to great music from the best of rock, disco, jazz, and hip-hop, as well as country and bluegrass.
It’s not just the exercise, it’s also a social event. It takes eight dancers to make a square and dancers work together for success. Singles are welcome, partners are encouraged. Everyone experiences the fun of learning a new skill and engaging mind and body.
Come try for free on Thursday, Jan. 4, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the free community dance or on Jan. 11 at the open house. Dancing is at Martel Elementary School, at the intersection of 196 and East Avenue.
A new 10-week class begins Jan. 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and costs $45 a dancer.
