LEWISTON — The Lewiston Police Department Citizens’ Police Academy will launch a 10-week program on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Participants will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at the police department except for two classes. Participants are expected to arrange their own transportation to the off-site classes.

The program will provide insight on the various operations of the department. The instructors will be sworn officers and representatives from nonpolice agencies. The instructors will provide information concerning they particular areas of the profession. The curriculum is frequently updated to stay current and offer a unique prospective on the issues police currently face.

This is an opportunity for applicants to learn about the department, and for the department to learn about the concerns of its community members. This is not a police officer training school and is not an open forum to discuss previous law enforcement contacts or grievances. All discussions will be held with respect to the class-time schedule.

Class size will be limited to 30 people, and preference will be given to Lewiston residents. Only those able to make a full commitment to the class should apply. An 80 percent attendance rate is required to successfully complete the Citizens’ Police Academy and to receive a certificate of completion.

A background check will be conducted on all applicants, and those with felony convictions or extensive criminal backgrounds will not be accepted. All applicants should be at least 18 years of age. Certain exceptions may be considered with parental permission – classes may include adult content material.

For more information, contact Officer Joseph Philippon at jphilippon@lewistonmaine.gov or at 207-513-3010. Return a completed application by Tuesday, Feb. 6. The application can be dropped off in person at the Lewiston Police Station, emailed to
