PHILLIPS — Two families escaped a burning apartment building Sunday after a grease fire on a kitchen stove spread into walls and the ceiling, Fire Chief Mark Rousseau said Monday.

Nine people were affected, according to a news release from the American Red Cross.

Their names were not immediately available.

The second-floor fire extended into the attic and roof at the two-apartment building at 32 Dodge Road, he said. When the firefighters arrived, flames could be seen coming through the roof and eaves.

Everyone got out safely, Rousseau said. There were no injuries reported.

Firefighters put salvage covers to save a lot of items in the first floor apartment but the second floor apartment was a total loss, Rousseau said.
