LEWISTON — Lifetree Cafe has announced two upcoming events.

A Chili and Chowder Challenge will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at Lifetree Cafe, 1919 Lisbon Road. Small awards will be given to the winners.

A program to explore the trends that will affect how people live in the future will follow at 6:30 p.m.

The program, titled “News from the Future: A Futurist Gives a Sneak Peek,” will feature a filmed interview with Thomas Frey, senior futurist at the DaVinci Institute.

“There’s an ongoing fear about the future,” said Frey, who encourages people to be aware of developments shaping their futures. “The future will happen, so let’s be engaged so we can take advantage of the opportunities. This is a wonderful time to be alive.”

Attendees will hear about key developments that Frey predicts will significantly change daily life in the coming decades.

The impact of homelessness on children will be explored at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Lifetree Cafe.

The program, titled “Children with No Place to Call Home: Helping Kids in Crisis,” will feature a filmed interview with Jennifer Herrera, director of the Colfax Community Network, an organization dedicated to serving children and families living in rundown motels in the heart of Denver, Colorado.

“These children are living in situations that are absolutely dangerous,” Herrera says. “Some of them know things that some of us have never experienced, never wish to experience and should never experience.”

Participants will have an opportunity to discuss ideas for helping address the issue of child homelessness.

Lifetree Cafe is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual coffeehouse-type setting. Questions may be directed to Travis Burleigh at 207-783-3316 or travisburleigh@gmail.com.
