AUBURN — A defensive struggle ensued the first time the rival Blue Devils and Red Hornets met on the ice this season.

There was more offense in the rematch, but the same result in the win column.

Lewiston/Monmouth/Oak Hill found the back of the net five times and got some key saves from its goalie to beat Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland 5-0 in a girls’ hockey game at Norway Savings Bank Arena on Monday.

The Blue Devils got off to a high-scoring start to their season heading into the first meeting with the Red Hornets, but goalie Manny Guimond shut them down in a 1-0 Blue Devil win. So getting through early against Guimond was critical.

Madison Conley did the honors 5:18 in, with assists from linemates Gemma Landry and Sara Robert. Jordyn Mynahan added another goal 58 seconds later for a quick 2-0 Blue Devils (14-2) lead.

“It’s a war of attrition with that team because Manny is very good,” Blue Devils coach Ron Dumont said. “So you got to — at least for us — we just got to put pucks on net until we can get something through.”

The Red Hornets (4-11-1), who only put five shots on net in the first meeting, had chances of their own in the first period, but Camree St. Hilaire made a key saves when she needed to, including stopping Madi Cote on a backdoor shot and Bri Doucette on a late breakaway.

“Camree’s a heck of a goalie,” Red Hornets coach Dana Berube said. “A couple breakaways, and I think Madi Cote hit the post there, it could have been much different early on, and that game would have been a little bit closer.”

Both goalies stood tall in the second period, and penalties did their part in stymieing the offenses as well, but the Blue Devils again were able to break through. Landry scored on a rebound of a Robert shot during 4-on-4 play with 5:30 left in the middle frame.

Berube said he thought his team was still in the game heading into the third. Dumont sensed the same thing and told his team to keep pushing for more.

More came in the form of freshman defender Grace Dumond, who scored a pair of goals to put the Red Hornets away.

The first goal from the Blue Devils’ “Big Rig,” as Dumont affectionately calls Dumond, came three minutes into the third. Katie Lemieux won a faceoff to the left of the goal and fed the puck back to Dumond, who sniped the shot in from the point.

“When that came up to me it was a perfect pass. I just saw the opening right above her blocker and I just went for it, and it worked out in my favor,” Dumond said. “She’s quick on the ground, so we had to get it up high.”

“I do have to say … Jordyn had a great screen there. Right up through,” Dumont said. “Grace’s job is to put it on the net, she’s done that, and the forwards got to create some kind of traffic up front, and did a real good job of that.”

Dumond struck again, unassisted, just under five minutes later. Her shot from the right circle snuck inside the top-left corner of the goal frame to beat Guimond, who she called a really good friend.

“Grace had a couple beautiful goals,” Berube said. “Picked the top corner on that wrist shot.”

“I think her wrist shot is as deadly as her slap shot,” Dumont said. “They’re both lethal.”

Guimond finished with 31 saves on 36 shots — or eight less than she faced the first game. At the other end, the Red Hornets doubled their shot output, going from five to 10.

“I thought we played better than we did last time we played them,” Berube said. “More competitive, meaning we had much more scoring opportunities.

“As we’re approaching the end of the regular season here, it’s something that we can take towards our last couple games, and hopefully into the playoffs.”
