Eagles to plan child adocacy event

RUMFORD — The Rumford Eagles will hold a kick-off meeting to start planning this year’s child advocacy event at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, in the bingo hall.

Lions Texas Hold’em Tournament

HARRISON — The Harrison Lions Club will hold a Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the VFW Hall, Waterford Road.

There will be a $55 entry fee. Doors will open at noon, with starting time at 1 p.m. Food and refreshments will be available.

The proceeds will be used to help support local children’s programs, such as eye screening, Christmas for Kids and scholarships.

Open Observatory Night on Feb. 2

PARIS —  Twitchell Observatory’s Monthly Open Observatory Night will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, if skies are clear. It will move to Saturday, Feb. 3, if weather is bad.

Objects to see will include Orion with the Orion Nebula, the Winter Hexagon of bright stars and Andromeda Galaxy.The event is free.

Knitting guild potluck meal, meeting

OXFORD — The Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the home of Eleanor Hedrick, Main Street, Route 26. There will be a potluck luncheon, so those attending should bring a salad, hot dish or dessert to share.

There will be a show-and-tell segment and a knit and chat time. Activities for the coming year will also be planned. Those attending should bring something red for “heart month” and Valentine’s Day.

The guild’s policy concerning bad weather during the winter is that if the Oxford Hills School District cancels school because of weather, then the guild will cancel the meeting for the month.

Beginning beekeeping class slated

PARIS — The Oxford Hills Honey Bee Club has announced that Carol Cottrill will teach a six-week beginning beekeeping class at Oxford Comprehensive High School.

Cottrill is a Master Beekeeper Exam Board member at EAS, secretary for EAS and past president of the Maine State Bee Association.

Post must elect full slate to remain open

RUMFORD — Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion, will hold election of officers for the coming year on Sunday, March 4. Installation will take place at the District 5 meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18.
