I agree with Anthony Esposito (letter, Sun Journal Jan. 30) that the two articles he mentioned “were obviously connected.” I would posit, however, that they were connected for a different reason.
The concurrent publication was an obvious attempt, a successful attempt, by the Sun Journal to elicit such predictable reactions as from Esposito. There, the connection between the articles ends.
The rounding up of Jews, German citizens, in Germany bears no resemblance to ICE personnel checking for illegal aliens on a bus in Bangor. Most people realize that illegal entrants into the U.S. is a big problem. Those illegal entrants then become illegal aliens who would typically try to get to some sanctuary in the interior of the U.S. Obviously, a bus is a means of doing that.
Bangor being within 100 miles of the Maine/Canadian border (the area of ICE activity) and being a transportation node, it should surprise no one that there might be a check made for illegal aliens on such a trip.
One might also question the source of Esposito’s angst in this matter, i.e., — “over a year under President Trump.” Is it more of a matter of who is doing something and not what is being done? I seem to recall numerous times the Obama administration touted the return of illegal entrants back across the border.
