SCARBOROUGH — Carl Edwin Damon Jr., 88, of Scarborough (and formerly of Poland), died peacefully Monday, Feb. 5, surrounded by family, at Maine Veterans’ Homes.

He was born Dec. 7, 1929, in Lewiston, a son of the late Carl and Fabiola (Desjardins) Damon Sr. He attended local schools, including Edward Little High School. He later attended classes provided by the University of Maryland and Florida State University.

He served in the United States Army in Germany at the end of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1949. In 1952 he joined the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and completed overseas assignments in France, Japan and Vietnam. In 1969, he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service as superintendent, Veterinary Services, 12th United States Air Force Hospital, Republic of Vietnam, while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force.

In August 1972, after 24 years of service, he retired from the United States Air Force and was employed as vice president of Yankee Insulation in Auburn. In 1985 he started Damon Insulation Co. which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1994.

Carl was a proud and generous man. His love of family was foremost and he greatly enjoyed hosting family gatherings and offering a helping hand when needed. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling, gardening and golf. He also enjoyed taking care of his vast property on his tractor, whether mowing, plowing or tilling.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Marianne Brown Damon, and her children: Linda Swallow and her husband, Albert, of South Portland, Maria Masselli and her husband, Tom, of Falmouth, and Raymond Brown, of Auburn; and four grandchildren, Alexandra Swallow, Staci Swallow, Kelsey Masselli and Domonic Masselli. He is also survived by a brother, Kenneth Damon, and two sisters, Linda Moore and Pat Stone.

Besides his parents, Carl was predeceased by his loving first wife, Louise Sheloske Damon; a brother, Donald Damon; and five sisters, Joyce Andrews, June Chabot, Rita Piirainen, Judith Lawlor and Dorothy Chabot.
