RUMFORD — Mariette Arlene (Peare) Dolloff, our beloved Nana, died Monday, Feb. 5, at the age of 99. Family, friends and hospice services made it possible for Nana to live in the Dolloff/Peare home to the end of her earthly life.

A lifelong resident of Rumford, Mariette was born March 23, 1918. She married Chester Livingston Dolloff on Feb. 27, 1937, and together they had four children: James Dolloff, William Dolloff, Joan Horst and John Dolloff.

Mariette graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford in 1936. She was active in 4-H and served as a 4-H adviser when her grandchildren were involved in the program. Although she lived in town while raising her family, Mariette loved country life and wildlife of all kinds, frequently caring for injured and abandoned animals.

Nana made anyone who walked through the door feel at home. She made a meal that nourished the body and the soul from just about anything. She loved unconditionally but wasn’t shy to show her disapproval. She taught the importance of family and friends, and that it doesn’t cost anything to listen. Lipstick and earrings were necessary for all occasions from the grocery store to a day spent cleaning house. But her most important lesson to us all: selflessness and the satisfaction of caring for others, raising not only her own children, but eight of her grandchildren and countless others who needed a safe, caring haven.

Mariette is survived by her daughter, Joan (Carl) Horst, of Midlothian, Va.; sons, William (Lauris) Dolloff, of Lisbon Falls, and John (Susan) Dolloff, of Rumford. She is also survived by grandchildren, Daniel (Lynda) Dolloff, Darla (Jeffrey) Patenaude, Chet (Josanne) Dolloff, Barry (Roben) Dolloff, Bryan (Dawn) Dolloff, Mark (Barbara) Dolloff, John (Kate) Dolloff, Gary Dolloff and special friend, Tammy Robbins, Jennifer (Jeffrey) Barker, James (Heidi) Dolloff, Jason Dolloff, Lisa (Mark) Bennett, Dean Martineau, Brett (Jennifer) Martineau, Jaunita (Michael) Mize, Pamela Dolloff, Michele (Mike) Patenaude, Aimee (Cory) Thibodeau and Logan (Christina) Dolloff; and nieces, Donna (Bud) Lowe and Robin (Barry) Nevel. At the time of her death, she had 101 descendents – four children, 19 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren.

Mariette was predeceased by her parents, Harold Raymond “HR” Peare and Alice Josephine (Haines) Peare; husband, Chester Dolloff; son, James Dolloff; sister, Doris (Peare) Thurston Roberts; great-grandsons, Joseph and Lucas Dolloff; great-granddaughter, Lacey Dolloff; nieces, Andrea Beauchesne and Dinah Cutting; and nephew, Kim Roberts.
