Mexico to hold Bicentennial Day Ceremony Tuesday

MEXICO — Mexico turns 200 years old Tuesday — Feb. 13, 2018.

Among other events, a celebration is being planned around the actual bicentennial date.

The public is invited to a Bicentennial Day Ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain Valley Middle School.

In the lecture hall, the Board of Selectmen and town manager will be part of a reenactment of the signing of the town charter, using a quill pen/ The bicentennial committee is expected to stand them as the proclamation of the town is read.

Refreshments will then be served in the cafeteria, which would include a sheet cake with the bicentennial logo.

Other events that day: At 10 a.m., a group from Mexico plans to attend the Maine House of Representatives for the daily Legislative Session. Pastor Izzy Radford-Nash of the Mexico Congregational Church will deliver the opening prayer and Elaine Michaud will sing the national anthem.

State Rep. John Madigan (past town manager) will present a Legislative Sentiment, and Rep. Dick Pickett and Sen. Lisa Kiem will be available for photos.

U.S. Postal Service to offer souvenir postmark

MEXICO — The U.S. Postal Service in Mexico will help celebrate the town’s bicentennial, offering a souvenir postmark from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mountain Valley Middle School.

The picture postmark is free. The Postal Service will apply the postmark on any envelope that has proper postage, making it a first-class souvenir of the day. The postmark bears the logo of the Mexico Bicentennial.

Those who miss the event but wish to obtain the postmark can submit a mail-order request.

Pictorial postmarks are available only with the dates indicated, and requests must be postmarked no later than 30 days following the pictorial postmark date.

Customers wishing to obtain a postmark should affix first-class postage to any envelope or postcard, address the envelope or postcard and tuck in the flap. Place the envelope or postcard in a larger envelope and address it to: Postmaster, Mexico Post Office, 7 Riverside Ave., Mexico, ME 04257.

After applying the pictorial postmark, the Postal Service returns the items (with or without addresses) under an protective cover.
