AUBURN — James Patrick Herbert, 61, passed away Friday, Feb. 9, at his home in Auburn, surrounded by family.

Jim was born on June 2, 1956, in Auburn, N.Y., the son of John “Jack” and Dorothy (Jahn) Herbert. He was a graduate of Auburn High School in Auburn, N.Y., and Saint Bonaventure University in Olean, N.Y. He received his doctorate of dental medicine from University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1982.

After graduating from dental school, he served in the United States Navy as a lieutenant commander and was stationed in Portsmouth, Va., Okinawa, Japan, and Newport, R.I. On Oct. 18, 1986, he married the former Katherine Cobbler.

Jim began his career in dentistry after his military service in Auburn, N.Y. In 1989, he purchased a dental practice and moved to Chatham, Mass., on Cape Cod with his family. Jim and Kathy raised their family on Cape Cod until they moved to Auburn in 2007, and Jim began practicing dentistry in Lewiston.

Jim loved living on Taylor Pond, spending many hours with his family on his pontoon boat enjoying the water. He liked watching old movies, “Star Trek” and Patriots games. Jim loved going to Comic Cons all over New England with his son, Kyle. He enjoyed visiting his daughters Kaitlin in Boston, Mass., and Anna in Burlington, Vt.

Jim took pride in supporting the Autism Society of Maine and the Special Olympics in Maine. He belonged to the American Dental Association and Maine Dental Association.

He leaves behind loving family of his wife, Katherine; his daughters, Kaitlin and Anna; and his son, Kyle. He is also survived by his father, John “Jack” Herbert; his brothers, Bill, John and Pat; his sister, Iris; and many cousins.

Jim was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy (Jahn) Herbert.
