PARIS — The 2018 McLaughlin Garden lectures series will continue on Wednesday, March 28, when Jean Potuchek will present “Botanizing and Herbaria — Then and Now.”
Potuchek is sociology professor emeritus at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. She now lives in East Poland where she has become a master gardener.
Potuchek’s research on herbaria stems from her interest in native plants and access to the Kate Starbird Herbarium. An herbarium is a collection of pressed flowers prepared for scientific purposes. This herbarium was given as a gift to the McLaughlin Garden by the Pottle family. Starbird, an amateur botanist with professional connections, was the librarian in Oxford from 1914–1952. Potuchek uses it to shed light on historic and modern uses of herbaria.
The illustrated lecture will begin at 4 p.m. upstairs in the historic Tribou home at 97 Main St., South Paris, where Bernard McLaughlin lived with his wife. Tea will be served at 3:30. The gift shop will be open.
The lecture is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted for the preservation of the buildings and garden. Parking is just to the north of Maurice’s; a driveway will be plowed. Parking is also available on Western Avenue.
