Walter Lance and his 8-year-old dog, Shep, take a break Thursday outside Artios Books, the Auburn bookstore where Lance works. Shep serves as the shop’s doorbell, letting Lance know when customers enter. A bowl of dog treats kept on the counter “turns the doorbell off.” Lance said the store mostly stocks used books, with romance novels and Westerns being hot on the used-book scene. “And of course, Stephen King,” he said.
