100 years ago, 1918
With the agitation for the formation of a new military company here for the Third Maine Regiment, there has arisen a question as to early data on local military history. It seems that when the Civil War broke out, Company F of the First Infantry Regiment was known here as the Lewiston Light Infantry. Company H, across the river was called the Auburn Artillery. The Lewiston Light Infantry took part in the quelling of the Kingfield draft riots and also was sent to Fort McClary for several months for guard duty on the Maine coast.
50 years ago, 1968
A former Auburn police official said today he will seek the Republican nomination to one of four Auburn seats in the Maine House of Representatives. Alton E. Savage of the Beech Hill Road, who served Auburn as chief of police for about 20 years, is making his first attempt to gain elective office. In announcing his candidacy, Savage said, “I have been a resident of Auburn since 1918 and a registered voter since 1927.”
25 years ago, 1993
Auburn Mayor Richard Trafton urged the newly appointed Biomedical Waste Committee Monday to consider what Auburn should get if the city agrees to allow the Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. to burn medical waste in its incinerator. The interlocal agreement that created the regional authority would have to be revised to allow MMWAC to burn medical waste. Trafton said, “Any amendments need to be considered carefully as they affect Auburn and the 11 other communities in MMWAC and MMWAC’s financial well-being,” Trafton said.
