AUBURN — A Lewiston man accused of dragging a woman behind his vehicle in January was indicted this week on multiple charges.

Daniel Chamberland, 28, was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on charges of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, driving to endanger, unlawful drug trafficking and driving with a suspended license.

Police described the Jan. 17 incident on Horton Street in Lewiston as a drug deal gone wrong. A 53-year-old woman suffered scrapes and bruises, police said, when Chamberland sped away as the woman clung to his car.

Investigators said the victim had met Chamberland in front of a downtown convenience store to buy the opioid painkiller Percocet from him. After handing over $100, the woman realized she had been swindled and attempted to retrieve her cash, according to court documents.

Chamberland sped away as the woman leaned into the car, dragging her for several feet before she let go and fell to the roadway. She was treated at a hospital and later released.

After reviewing surveillance footage and speaking to witnesses, police found Chamberland a few streets away and arrested him. He has remained in jail since.
