Maine State Police are investigating skeletal remains that were discovered in a wooded area off Route 100 in Falmouth.

The  remains were found by a couple walking in the woods Sunday morning, said state police spokesman Steve McCausland.

The remains have been transported to the office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for further examination.

Police are checking missing persons reports, although none have been filed with Falmouth police, McCausland said.

The exact location of the discovery is being withheld pending further investigation and work by the medical examiner, McCausland said.
