After more than a dozen residents made their cases for preserving their neighborhood, the Auburn Planning Board voted Tuesday not to recommend changing the city’s light industrial districts to industrial districts. However, the City Council will have the final word and will take its first vote on the proposed zoning ordinance change at its April 21 meeting, said Land Use Planning and Enforcement Director James McPhee. After more than 90 minutes of a public hearing during which three developers explained the difficulty of selling or leasing land in the light industrial district, the board voted 5-2 against changing it to permit more uses. Donna Sterling, a Fletcher Road resident, asked the board members to think about the hardships residents in the area have endured as industry has continued to grow near their homes.
