LEWISTON — Virtuoso Italian pianist Roberto Plano makes his Maine debut at Lewiston’s Gendron Franco Center on Saturday, April 21. His recital begins at 7 p.m. and will feature works by Liszt, Piazzolla, Villa-Lobos, Ginastera and Gershwin.

Only 22 when he won first prize at the 2001 Cleveland International Piano Competition, Plano went on to garner major prizes in other important competitions, including the Honens (Calgary), Geza Anda (Zürich) and Valencia, and he was a finalist at the 2005 Van Cliburn Competition. 

The Cleveland victory launched a performance career that has taken him to concert venues in Europe, North America, Asia and South Africa. In addition to giving solo recitals and concerto performances with major orchestras, he regularly collaborates with chamber groups. He has appeared with ensemble groups such as the Takacs, Cremona, Fine Arts and Saint Petersburg String Quartets, and he performs piano duos with his wife, Paola Del Negro.

In 2016, Plano moved with his wife and three daughters from their native Italy to Massachusetts, where he joined the faculty at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts.

Admission is $15; seniors, $10; students are free. A pre-concert social hour begins when the doors open at 6 p.m. The Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center is located at 46 Cedar St. and is handicapped accessible.
