Use of the air rifle by grammar schools boys is becoming a menace in some parts of the city. It is a dangerous practice and accidents are impossible to prevent when a group of boys armed with air guns are trying to kill all the birds in the neighborhood.
 
50 years ago, 1968
A combination of rain and melting snow caused the Androscoggin and Kennebec rivers to spill over their banks once again, causing minor flooding in parts of Maine, officials said Sunday. “It took only an inch of rain on Saturday to put the rivers back above flood stage because they were already swollen from heavy rain a week ago,” said Tom Berman of the National Weather Service in Portland. The rivers rose quickly Saturday night and remained above flood stage on Sunday, Berman said. The Androscoggin was 1 1/2 feet above flood stage at Auburn and still rising at 5:30 p.m.
 
25 years ago, 1993
Former Democratic presidential candidate Jerry Brown will be at Lost Valley Ski Lodge Monday evening to give a Patriots Day address. This will be Brown’s first visit to Maine since his victory last year in the state’s Democratic presidential caucuses. The event is co-sponsored by We the People Maine, the Coalition for Political Reform, and the Androscoggin County Consensual Government.
