One of the busiest places in the Lewiston city building is the selective service board quarters in the board of public works office. Physical examinations are held each day, and there is a steady stream of registrants in and out of the office.
 
50 years ago, 1968
“Every Litter Bit Hurts” applies not only to highways and parks, but to downtown streets as well, and this was clearly illustrated this morning as some 14 waste receptacles were placed strategically throughout Lewiston’s downtown shopping district, to keep it clean. The project, sponsored by the City of Lewiston and the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce, was funded by the city council earlier this year, which appropriated $500 for the downtown beautification program, and that amount was matched by the Chamber.
 
25 years ago, 1993
A contract for the purchase of a war monument to honor Mechanic Falls veterans was signed last week. The entire cost of the purchase and installation of the monument will be borne by the Mechanic Falls-Minot-Poland Post 150 of the American Legion. The granite monument will be provided by Collette Monuments Inc. of Lewiston, one of three companies to submit project proposals. Post 150 Commander Edmund A. MacDonald said the project is the post’s contribution to the town’s centennial observance this year.
