100 years ago, 1918

Louis J. Brann, former Lewiston mayor and judge of the municipal court, and one of the most successful of Lewiston attorneys, has been appointed manager of the Strand theater and will begin his new duties next Monday. He is to succeed Harry McCarron, former chief of police. who is to take a vacation because of ill health. This bit of information will interest everybody in Lewiston, because everybody in Lewiston is acquainted with Mr. Brann. He will assume his duties as one of the managers in the chain of playhouses controlled by the Union theater company, and, although he has not previously been identified with the theatrical game, his popularity and business experience should insure his success from the start. He will continue his law practice, in part or in whole, and will handle certain legal matters for the theater company.

50 years ago, 1968

Larry Gowell, former Edward Little High School mound star who was signed by the New York Yankees last year and spent the 1967 season with the Oneonta (N.Y.) Yankees, will be back with the same team this summer. Gowell is slated to report as soon as he completes his studies at Bliss College, where he is a first-year student. Bliss College final exams wind up on May 27, after which Gowel will be free to continue his baseball career.

25 years ago, 1993

The Auburn City Council will consider a proposed ordinance on vendors using city-owned property when the members meet for their regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday. “The ordinance would require potential vendors to have insurance for themselves and the city,” said Patricia Finnigan, assistant to the city manager. The council will be asked to set a special fee above the city’s vendor fee and to specify how close a vendor can be located to another established business selling similar food or merchandise.
