On Wednesday, Mountain Valley and Dirigo take their rivalry to the tennis court when the Cougars host Mountain Valley in the girls’ match, while the boys’ teams will battle in Rumford.

Both matches will start at 4 p.m.

The Falcons’ girls’ team is relying on its youth during their strong, 5-1 start to the season.

“I have a great group of 13 girls, very enthusiastic, some new girls that want to learn, very driven, athletic and just have that drive,” Mountain Valley coach Larissa Wing said. “We have built a good core foundation of girls playing in the ladder this year. They have been really strong.”

No. 1 singles player Brooke Carver and the No. 1 doubles team of Avery Sevigny and Rylee Sevigny are each undefeated.

The Mountain Valley girls are in the middle of four matches in five days this week. The Falcons defeated Oak Hill 5-0 on Monday and before suffering their first loss of the season to Carrabec, 5-0, on Tuesday. After their match with Cougars on Wednesday, they host Boothbay on Friday.

There won’t be any shuffling of the lineup for the week, either, since Abbey Duguay has returned to the lineup.

“We are going to give Abbey Duguay and Sarah Cunningham a shot,” Wing said. “(It’s OK) when someone is out, I have a great group of girls I can pull from to step up and fill in.”

It’s also an important match for Dirigo girls — they are fighting for a playoff spot in Class C South and sit with a record of 2-3.

Th Dirigo boys are 4-0 heading into their match against Mountain Valley. Their next four matches are against potential playoff opponents, starting with Mountain Valley, followed by Madison on Monday, Carrabec on May 16, and Hall-Dale on May 18.

The Mountain Valley boys’ team is also playing pretty good tennis right now after losing its first two matches. The Falcons have won their past three matches, defeating Wiscasset 3-2 last Wednesday, Lisbon on Friday (5-0) and Hall-Dale (3-2)

Saints battling to victories

The St. Dom’s boys’ team has been playing well the past week, winning three of four matches.

The Saints swept North Yarmouth Academy twice — 4-1 on May 1 and again Monday. They defeated Greely on Friday, 3-2. Their lone loss came to Waynflete, 5-0, on May 2.

“We grinded it out,” St. Dom’s coach Andrew Girouard said. “We had four matches in (six) days.”

St. Dom’s is fighting for a playoff spot in Class C South at 3-2. As part of the Western Maine Conference, most of the remaining schedule involves Class B schools. A rematch with Waynflete on May 17 is the Saints’ lone match remaining against a Class C opponent.

Girouard is taking things one match at a time.

“Last week the goal was .500, that’s kind of the goal for the season too,” Girouard said. “It’s minium of hitting .500. We can’t take any match for granted. You can look at someone’s record, it doesn’t dictate how good of a team they are.”

He said his team has to show up and play.

They take on York (2-3) on Wednesday and Yarmouth (2-2) on Monday.

On Monday, in the match against NYA, Robby Kurtz, the Saints’ No. 1 player, had to retire because of an injury. Girouard is unsure how long Kurtz may be out.

“I am going to pull a Bill Belichick and we will call him day-to-day with a lower body injury,” Girouard said. “We are working on it right now and the hope is he will be back soon.”

Lewiston teams score big wins on Monday

Both the Lewiston boys’ and girls’ teams gave their opponents their first loss of the season as the boys team defeated Mt. Ararat 3-2, while the girls’ team blanked Brunswick 5-0.

In the boys’ contest. No. 2 singles Ben St. Laurent defeated Ryan Glass 7-6 (2) and 6-0 while the doubles’ teams’ won both of their matches. The No. 1 team of Jacob Smith and Hayden Bavis defeated Zander Chown and Luke Curnin 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The No. 2 team of Ethan Weiss and Jeremy Hepler defeated Will San Pedro and Natan Cofroth, 6-1 and 6-4.

The Eagles took No. 1 and the No. 3 singles. In the top singles match, Peter Mao defeated Caden Smith 6-0, 6-1, while in the No. 3 singles, Matt Mosher defeated Sam Frechette 7-6, 6-1.

The win improved the Blue Devils’ record to 4-2. The Eagles dropped to 4-1 on the season.

The Lewiston girls’ improved to 7-0 with their 5-0 win over Brunswick and sit atop of Class A North. Every match ended in straight sets.

Abby Svor defeated Anna Parker in the top singles, Julia Svor defeated Lea Scrapchansky in second singles and Roslynn Wailus defeated Sara Scrapchansky in third singles. In doubles competition, Molly Chicoine and Maddy Foster defeated the team of Galen Gaze and Abbey Parke. In second doubles, Jill Pelletier and Lauren Foster defeated Zoe Battle and Erin Coughli.

Brunswick droped to 4-1.
