POLAND — The family of a Poland man killed in a crash on Route 11 on April 27 asked selectpersons Tuesday night to look into improving safety at the site.

Skylar Lee Huff, 27, was driving an ATV on his property near Route 11 and North Raymond Road when he entered Route 11 and collided with a tractor-trailer. He died at the scene.

Huff’s family said a yellow caution light at the intersection it’s not enough to slow drivers.

“People do not pay attention there, they are careless,” Huff’s girlfriend, Mekayla Farley, said. People fly down that road, going at least 60, and they don’t slow down at the light, she said.

“Stop signs, yellow lights, police cars, none of it works,” she said.

Selectperson James Walker said Route 11 is a state road, so state permission is required to do anything, but he wanted to get the ball rolling as quickly as possible.

“I’ve lived on that road all my life,” he said. “There’s been a lot of accidents on that road.”

Town Manager Matthew Garside said the first step would be for officials from the state highway department and the town, and the fire chief and the road commissioner to meet to see what can be done.

“We need to get together and solve this,” Walker said.

In other business, the board decided not to give further consideration to joining with area towns to switch street lights to LEDs because there isn’t time for voters to approve the $50,000 cost by May 31.

Garside said Central Maine Power officials told him they would eventually do it at no cost to the town.

Selectmen reminded residents they are looking for volunteers for the new Senior Tax Committee to find ways to give older residents a tax break.
