Raymond and Charlotte Leary

SHELBURNE, Vt. — Charlotte and Raymond Leary, of Shelburne, Vt., united in marriage for 65 years, passed away within days of each other, on May 18 and May 21, respectively. Thankfully, their separation in this world was brief and it is a relief and comfort to their family and friends to know that they have been reunited.

Charlotte Bartley Silver (7/22/30 – 5/18/18) was born and raised in Glens Falls, N.Y., where she forged many lifelong friendships. Charlotte graduated from Russell Sage College in 1952. While in college Charlotte met and eventually married a young man attending nearby Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

Raymond Edward Leary (2/22/28 – 5/21/18) was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. He spent much of his childhood with his cousins at their grandparents’ home in Saddle River, N.J. Ray was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945 and served in Japan for a year during its occupation by U.S. forces. He returned home and, under the GI Bill, graduated from RPI in 1952. While in college Ray met and eventually married a young woman attending nearby Russell Sage College.

Charlotte and Ray married in 1952. They moved to Vermont and eventually settled in Shelburne, where they raised their four children. Ray worked as an engineer at IBM for many years. After raising the children, Charlotte worked at UVM as a schedule adviser and administrative assistant in the physical education department for about 15 years.

Charlotte enjoyed tennis, her bridge groups and her annual high school reunions in Glens Falls. Ray enjoyed reading, golf, tennis, telling stories and writing letters to the editor in local publications. They both loved to travel (visiting Europe 29 times) and were fortunate to spend many winters in Puerto Rico and in Naples, Fla. Mostly, they cherished their time with their family and their wide circle of friends.

Charlotte and Ray were predeceased by their eldest son, Jared, and their granddaughter, Sarah.

They leave behind their son, Justin, of Auburn and his wife, Pam, and their four children, Cameron, Karen, Bowen and Quinlan; their son, Jim, of Brandon, Vt., his wife, Nancy, and their children Jenifer and Carson; their daughter, Jane Agran, of Richmond, Vt., her children Ella and Hannah, and their father, Bryan Agran; their grandson, Charles Leary, of Raleigh, N.C., his wife, Taryn, and their son, John; their granddaughter, Samantha Leary, of New York City, and their mother (Jared’s widow), Mary-Anne Leary, of Raleigh, N.C.
