PORTLAND — Carole Elaine Cranford Quimby, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, passed away Saturday, May 19, at Maine Medical Center at the of age 66, after a long struggle with numerous health challenges.

Carole was the daughter of the late George W. and Mattelaine (Conner) Cranford. Carole was born in Brockton, Mass., on June 26, 1951, and graduated from Brockton High School in 1969. In 1972, she graduated from Westbrook College in Portland, with a degree in dental hygiene.

Wayne and Carole were married in October 1972. The couple welcomed their only child, Elizabeth, in 1986.

Carole worked as a dental hygienist in Yarmouth, Standish and South Portland. She retired from the profession in 1986, from the office of Dr. John B. Corey, DMD, the practice she loved the most.

Most recently, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning and operating her own gift shop, C. Periwinkle & Co. in Harpswell, which opened in 2010 and ran successfully for eight years. Here she was able to share her beautiful handmade jewelry, sea wreaths and artwork with locals and vacationers alike.

Carole enjoyed traveling; she loved Egyptian history and toured Egypt with her mother in 1983. However, her favorite place to be was their home on the water at Pott’s Point in Harpswell. There she spent unforgettable years with her family and friends enjoying beautiful sunsets, finding beach treasures, and walking her Yorkshire terriers along the ocean shore.

Though family was her ultimate devotion, Carole was very involved in her community churches and local organizations. She was an active member of the Cumberland Center, Falmouth and Elijah Kellogg Congregational Churches. She loved sharing her gift of singing in the choir, a passion she passed on to her daughter at a very young age. Carole was also a member of the Harpswell Garden Club, King’s Daughters, Maine Orchid Society and Maine Audubon.

Carole was a constant source of support, beauty and strength to all. Her unconditional love for all people and animals was palpable instantly to anyone who met her, and she left a lasting impression on all she knew.

She was predeceased by her brother, George Cranford III.

She is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Wayne Quimby, of Brunswick; daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Christopher, of Lisbon Falls; sister, Charlotte Clive, of Delaware; sisters-in-law Ellen Quimby Simandl of Wisconsin and Carlene Quimby Petersen of Gorham; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
