PENSACOLA, Fla. — Raymond Orszak, known throughout the circus world as the “Million Dollar Circus Ringmaster,” passed away after a brief illness May 22 in Pensacola, Fla., at age 81.

His creative talents were evident from an early age. He started his long and successful career in show business by dazzling nightclub audiences with his magic acts and he was a gifted actor in local theater.

He graduated with honors from Lewiston High School. Raymond’s larger-than-life personality was an ideal fit for the entertainment industry. He traveled throughout the country with his magic acts and earned the infamous title “Liberace of the Circus.” In the course of his career, he served as ringmaster for both the Royal Hanneford Circus and Circus Royale.

Raymond was with the Royal Hanneford Circus for more than 15 years, and was known for his innovation: He was the first magician to complete a floating levitation act. He was also a fashion designer who was able to craft everything from flamboyant circus costumes to exquisite wedding dresses.

Raymond toured for many years with his beloved partner, Michael, in an act called “The Magnificent Señor Rai and Tillie.” Their act was a vibrant mélange of illusion and humor.

Raymond’s final performance was in the musical Moulin Rouge at Caesar’s Palace in Atlantic City on New Year’s Eve 1999. He played the part of the announcer, Harold Zidler.

Known to his fans as “Señor Rai,” among family he was affectionately called “Uncle Rai.” Raymond was known for his sardonic sense of humor and would often leave friends and family crying with laughter. He loved his family, friends and dogs, and was particularly close to his sister, Jane, who predeceased him in 2009.
