TURNER — The board of selectmen announced Monday the town will vote on acquiring the Turner Natural History Club and Museum at a special town meeting this month.

The board first voted in favor of asking residents if they want to acquire the building in September 2017.

The building at 442 Turner Center Road sits on 1.6 acres and is said to be more than 100 years old.

The meeting will be held Wednesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Turner Municipal Building.

The board also approved adding a medical marijuana storefront moratorium ordinance to the town meeting Monday.

If passed by the town, the moratorium would keep anyone from opening a medical marijuana store anywhere in Turner for 180 days.

Town Manager Kurt Schaub said the reason for wanting a moratorium is the lack of guidance from the state on how to handle these types of establishments.

“This would be an animal that would look and feel like a recreational marijuana store without the town deciding ahead of time whether they want one,” Schaub said.

He said it is hard to tell what voters in Turner would want right now, and this is just a way to buy more time.

If the moratorium does not get approved, applications for medical marijuana stores would go to the planning board, “who would be at a loss for what to do,” Schaub said.

In other business, the board voted in favor or using shim and overlay paving instead of shim and chip seal on Mountainside and Field drives.

The shim and overlay is more expensive at $57,0000, but board chairman Kurt Youland said the town can figure out a way to bring the cost under the $50,000 budget.

The board also agreed to let the Turner Timberland ATV Club continue using Back Cove Drive and Cobb Road after the one-year trial run that ended this week.
