PORTLAND (AP) — Maine’s Republican governor says if he were asked, he would send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Gov. Paul LePage said Wednesday he would do so if Republican President Trump makes a request.
LePage’s comment comes as multiple East Coast governors have announced they won’t deploy National Guard resources near the U.S.-Mexico border. Such governors are criticizing the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy that has resulted in children being separated from their families.
The Maine Army National Guard didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.
Republican governors including Larry Hogan of Maryland and Charlie Baker of Massachusetts have reversed steps to station National Guard resources at the border.
Democratic governors in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York and Virginia have indicated their refusal to send troops.
