LEWISTON — Enrichment classes for families and children will return for the summer at Lewiston Adult Education.

They will feature staff from Bates College, the Maine State Library and 4-H. Museum L-A has become the newest partner with Lewiston Adult Education. The local nonprofit organization will host a class in August.

All the events will be free, but registration is required. Lewiston Adult Education began offering classes for families in 2016 as a way to help keep local children involved and interested in science and the humanities during summer vacation.

The first one of the summer will be a visit to the Ladd Planetarium at Bates College at 7 p.m. Monday, June 25. Nicole Hastings, an assistant in instruction in the Physics Department at Bates, will teach a class about looking for stars, planets and constellations in the night sky.

The Ladd Planetarium is located in Carnegie Science Hall on 44 Campus Ave. The class could include using a telescope outside but is dependent on weather conditions on the night of June 25.

Laura Personette of 4-H will teach a number of hands-on classes during the summer, including lessons on making a glider, building a miniature bridge and creating a small boat.

Chris Dorman of the Maine State Library will do a presentation on air-propelled rockets. The class, which will go outside for launches, will require students to wear protective goggles.

The last class of the summer will be held on Aug. 1 and feature Museum L-A. The hands-on demonstration will explain how fabrics are spun and woven and how they connect to Lewiston’s manufacturing past.

The Museum L-A class will be held at its location on 35 Canal St.  Aside from the Bates class, all the remaining classes will be held at Lewiston High School.

The schedule of summer enrichment classes will be distributed to local elementary schools and posted on Lewiston Adult Education’s website.

For more information about the classes or to register, call Lewiston Adult Education at 207-795-4141.
