Laurie Whitman and her father, Joe Milstead, relax at the 33rd Rod & Kustom Kruisers Annual Rod Run in front of Milstead’s 1929 Essex jalopy in Fryeburg on Friday. Milstead has been driving the car for 40 years. Organizers of the event promote it as a low-stress alternative to a classic car show, with homemade trophies and activities such as a free barbecue, an ice cream run and rod jousting, in which participants attempt to spear a ring with a pool cue while leaning out of their antique cars.
