LEWISTON — Frederic A. St. Linger, 82, of 10 Claire St., Lewiston, died at his home Thursday, June 21.

Born in Methuen, Mass., on Sept. 1, 1935, he was the son of Arno and Gertrude St. Linger. He attended local public schools in Lawrence, Mass., and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Class of ’52. His further education included Valley Forge Military Academy and Junior College, Wayne, Pa., graduating in 1954. He also obtained an Associate of Science degree in aeronautical engineering at Embry Riddle Aeronautical Institute in Miami, Fla., in 1957, and attended Northeastern University in Boston, Mass., on a part-time basis and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial technology in 1973.

He was employed on overseas assignments with Harold T. Smith International S.A. of Washington, D.C., from September 1958 to April 1963.This job took him to Colombia, South America, western Pakistan, Egypt, and London, England. During his tour in Colombia he married the former Luz Rodriguez in Cali, Colombia, in November 1959. Their daughter Marlene was born in Cairo, Egypt, on Aug. 2, 1962. They lived in London until their return to the U.S. in April of 1963. Fred was employed by Lawrence Pumps Inc., of Lawrence, Mass., until 1969. He then moved on to Charles T. Main Inc., in Boston, working as a design engineer in the pulp and paper industry. This included design work and field assignments in pulp and paper mills in Maine, Canada, and several southern states. During this period he met Lothar Bachmann and assisted in the specification of expansion joints and dampers for the pulp and paper industry.

Fred and his family moved to Lewiston until May 1980, then returned to Massachusetts where he was employed by Badger Engineers, a Raytheon-owned company, from July 1980 to January 1995. This employment took him to several field assignments in Brazil, South Korea, and Singapore. After 13 years with Badger, he returned to Lewiston and was employed as a sales and design engineer at WahlcoMetroflex. He retired as a full-time employee in 1997, but continued to work part time until 2003. He was also employed part time at L.L.Bean of Freeport as a camping sales associate until January 2008.

Fred spent a great deal of his spare time hiking, backpacking, camping in both Maine and New Hampshire. He has climbed most of the highest peaks in the White Mountains, and was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club.

He leaves behind his wife of Lewiston, his daughter, Marlene Adair of Bethlehem, N.H., three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Thomas St. Linger.
