Jay Historical Society seeks crafters

JAY — The Jay Historical Society is seeking crafters and vendors to participate in the annual open house from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

This year’s theme is an old-fashioned carnival and agricultural fair. Local vendors of handcrafted items and produce will have the opportunity to sell their items on the Jay Historical Society’s lawn beside Route 4.

Each participant will receive one table space at no cost. Vendors and crafters should call 207-320-9799 or email email jayhistoricalsocietyme@gmail.com with a brief description of what they sell and their contact information to register.

Farmer’s market on Thursdays

NORWAY — The Norway Farmer’s Market will be open from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, through Oct. 4, at Witherell Park by the police station.

Pine Tree Quilters Guild meeting

NORWAY — The Pine Needles chapter of the state wide Pine Tree Quilters Guild meets from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursdays in the community room of the Norway Town Office, year around.

Hand- and machine-quilters are welcome.

There is a schedule of optional activities such as occasional road trips, group projects and monthly trips out for lunch.

Maine Genealogical Dig at Deering

PARIS — Paris Public Library will hear about DNA testing and how it can be used to assist with traditional genealogy research at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at Deering Memorial Community Center

Maine Genealogical Dig is a DNA interest group. The presentation covers all aspects of DNA testing, with group discussions and sharing.

The meeting is free and open to everyone, highlighting who, when, why to test and how to most efficiently work with the results.

Phillips Historical Society extending hours

PHILLIPS — The Phillips Historical Society has extended operating hours. Beginning Sunday, July 1, the museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and continue on the first and third Sundays through October.

The Museum has new acquisitions this season that include scrapbook and photo collections from around town; Fly Rod Crosby documents and photos; Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad artifacts; a tool room; a replica classroom; a dentist office; a country store; and a period living room, children’s room, bedroom and kitchen.

Local history books are for sale. Members will be on hand to provide tours and answer questions.

Socrates Cafe discussing nuclear weapons

BRIDGTON — Socrates Cafe will meet Monday, July 2, at the Bridgton Community Center. A meet-and-greet will be from 6:15 to 6:30 p.m., and discussion will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. 

The topic is “Do Nuclear Weapons Keep Us Safe?” Sally Chappell will moderate.
