SPRINGVALE — A Sanford man drowned Thursday afternoon while swimming in the Mousam River at Holdsworth Park off Route 109 in Springvale.
Michael Lancaster, 64, was downriver from day campers using the park and was not in an area protected by park lifeguards, according to Sanford Parks and Recreation Director Alan Grady.
Grady said campers in the park saw and heard rescue crews responding to the scene, but they were unable to assist the swimmer.
He said children swimming in a lifeguard-supervised section of the park have been removed from the area as a precaution.
