BANGOR — One day after Colton Carson lifted Bessey Motors with a dominant pitching performance, Bangor Coffee News’ Gary Farnham sent it crashing back to earth with a masterpiece of his own.

Farnham scattered three hits while going the distance to lead Coffee News to a 5-0 victory in the American Legion baseball state tournament at the Winkin Sports Complex on the campus of Husson University on Sunday.

Coffee News faces Coastal Landscaping at 7 p.m. Monday. Bessey Motors will face R.H. Foster-Hampden in an elimination game at 4 p.m.

Farnham fanned eight and walked one while throwing an efficient 85 pitches. Ashton Kennison had two of those hits, Rodney Bean the other.

The Comrades broke up a scoreless tie in the fourth when, with runners at second and third and one out, Zach Cowperthwaite grounded to third. Emery Chickering, playing even with the third base bag, looked home while considering trying to throw out Zach Ireland, who was off on contact, but elected to throw to first instead. The ensuing rushed throw was wild and allowed Jacob Munroe, who had stolen second the pitch before, to follow Ireland across the plate for a 2-0 lead.

Coofee News broke it open an inning later. Tyler Parke made it 3-0 with an RBI double to left, then scored the Comrades’ fourth run on Noah Missbrenner’s single. One out later, Zach Murray doubled him home and chased Bessey starter Wyatt Williamson from the game.

Reliever Jonny Pruett escaped any further damage thanks to a great diving stop and throw to first by Chickering to rob Cowperthwaite of a hit and another RBI.
