NORWAY — Beachgoers at the Norway Lake public swimming area rescued a 44-year-old man Friday afternoon, police officer John Lewis said.

Swimmers brought the man to the surface and pulled him onto a floating dock where they administered CPR, Lewis said.

Dispatchers received a call at 4:43 p.m. and sent rescue crews to the scene where ambulance and fire personnel took over efforts to revive the man, Lewis said.

The man was placed on a backboard and taken to shore by boat to a waiting ambulance. He was driven to Stephens Memorial Hospital and transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Lewis said he didn’t know the man’s medical condition.
